Abstract
We developed Statements Repetition Technique(SRT) which is modified version of word repetition technique from acceptance and commitment therapy(ACT) program, and tested whether repetitive reading of negative self-referent statements could weaken the meaning of the statements and improve subjects¡¯ mood state. 82 subjects of study 1 wrote down some negative self-referent thought as statement format not as wordformat, and read those repetitively. They reported feeling of tiresome, being in a third person¡¯s place, and the SRT-induced unpleasantness became thin. Study 2 compared 42 subjects who repetitively read some negative self-referent thought(statement repetition condition)with 42 subjects reading repetitively couple of epigrams(a comparison condition). Negative thought related mood was measured several times over the course of SRT procedures with 10 point likert scale, and reliable improvement was observed until 5th evaluation at both conditions. After a short rest, mood improvement of statements repetition condition persisted at final mood evaluation, but the improvement of comparison condition disappeared. With all other variables controlled, this difference was surely due to the defusion mechanism induced by SRT.
